Independence Day 2025

15th August 1947 was the day when India finally got freedom from the clutches of British rule after 200 years of slavery. Independence Day is a national public holiday celebrated across all the states of the nation.

The first Indian National flag was hoisted on August 7, 1906, at Parsi Bagan Square in Kolkata. This flag had three major colours, namely red, yellow, and green, with Vandematram written in between. Mahatama Gandhi was then on a hunger strike to end the Hindu-Muslim riots happening in Bengal.

The national flag was developed by Pingali Venkaya, who was a farmer from Andhra Pradesh. India did not have an official National anthem at the time of independence. It was accorded the status as the National anthem of India on January 24, 1950. Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy, declared the independence day of India. Other than India, five other countries celebrate their independence day on August 15, namely, Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea, the Republic of Congo, and Liechtenstein.

It was a proud and historic moment for every Indian. On this day, our flag was hoisted at the Red Fort by our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This great moment marked the end of the British rule in India. The British came to India for trade, but slowly took control of our land. They took away the rights of our people. Our freedom did not come easily. It came after many struggles and movements like the Civil Disobedience Movement. Brave leaders and freedom fighters led these movements with courage and sacrifice.

We remember great Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh, and many more. We are today because of them. This day reminds us of the journey of our country. It also reminds us to protect the values of justice, liberty, and equality. India is known for its unity in diversity. We speak different languages, follow different cultures, but we are all one nation. This is our strength.
