
“My Inspiration Is Nature”: Dr. Satinder Sartaaj on Sufiana Kalam, Faith, and the Voice That Healed Millions
Millions of people listen to his voice filled with spirituality. A simple man with purity in his voice and brings peace in the lives of people. He is a Punjabi singer who sings Sufiana kalam and who made Punjabi folk songs to a new level of popularity. He gave an interview to The Lallantop.
Dr. Satinder Sartaaj said that the name of his village is Bajravar. In childhood he used to go to Gurdwara Harian Velan and then come back to feed his cattle. He said his biggest inspiration is nature. His 80% songs symbolism is a metaphor. It happens around nature. He said it was his dream to become a music professor and have doctor before his name. soon he started singing and people started liking it. He was born into a religious family. His grandmother has a great influence on him. He is the youngest in the family.
Dr. Satinder Sartaaj mentioned he was exposed to religious songs. Radio used to start at 5.00 pm to listen to Gurbani from Shri Amritsar Sahib. When he went to his maternal uncles home, Adampur airport which is only 11 km from his village, he went to the streets of his village and went to Gurudwara Sahib and bowed down. He also wrote few lines about it, “This is the village where we used to live in our childhood. We used to play here in Gurudwara I used to recite prayers on the mike and the villagers used to know.” His grandfather used to give medicines to the villagers from his small shop. Since then, he has a connection with mic and speakers.
Dr. Satinder said that he started learning music after 10th standard. He used to go to Jalandhar Cantt Ancient art and do a diploma in Sangeet Visharad. He used to take lessons from there and practice in the evening. As he completed his graduation, his graduation with music honours also completed, music Visharat which was a five-year diploma also finished. This is how his official education about music started.
Dr. Satinder Sartaaj said was scared to write on a serious note as people would consider that he thinks a lot about himself. He convinced his parents that he wanted to Mphil. He started doing small things so that he could pay his college fees. He started teaching the students. He got a gold medal from Department of Persian and Urdu. With a passage of time, he learned to speak with dignity and firmness. It got ingrained in him that he could speak effortlessly. Bhangra was a preferred thing for him.
Ignorance is a bliss is a perfect quote for him, he said. His songs were uploaded on YouTube when he was in college. Mr Iqbal Mahal listened to his songs from there, and when he came to India, he recorded his songs. From there, his song Sai became popular. The video of his song Sai was shot in Jaisalmer. He also exclaimed that the temperament of an artist matters more when recording songs. The Nazamgah that he has in his house after 2016, he has made all the songs by himself and dubbed them, and send to the music director. The name of his house is Firdaus. There is another room in his house with the name Ehsaasa Di Dukan where he has kept the gifts given by people.
