K. Bhagyaraj, legendary Tamil filmmaker, dies at 73 in Chennai. He died of cardiac arrest in Chennai on 27 June, aged 73. CM Vijay and Governor Arlekar led tributes to the legendary screenwriter-director.
Who was K. Bhagyaraj?
He was an Indian filmmaker, actor, screenwriter, and producer. His popular films include Mundhanai Mudichu (1983), Andha 7 Naatkal (1981), Indru Poi Naalai Vaa (1981), and Mouna Geethangal (1981).
Awards and Achievements
He received the Filmfare Awards South, best actor award in Tamil for Mundhanai Mudichu (1983). He also got the Cinema Express Awards for Best Story Writer for Pavunnu Pavunuthan (1991). He was also given Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement (2014) by South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA).

He was a director who taught the Tamil film industry a new language of storytelling. He was also a writer who transformed the life of an ordinary man into an extraordinary story.

K. Bhagyaraj breathed his last in Chennai due to a heart attack. He acted in 75 films and directed 25 films. Through his work, he had proved that the hero in Indian cinema is not just about songs and fights, but he represents a strong story and character too.
His films revolved around stories of family bond, humour, and emotions of a middle-class person. He had made a mark for himself as a director, writer, actor, and producer.
CM Vijay and Rajinikanth Pay Tribute
Tamil Nadu’s CM, Vijay, consoled Bhagyaraj’s son, Shantanu. CM Vijay gave Shantanu a tight hug.
Rajnikanth had come to pay tribute to K. Bhagyaraj. He offered floral respects to the veteran actor.
Celebrities Mourn K. Bhagyaraj’s Demise
Several celebrities from the film industry paid tribute to him on X. Anil Kapoor wrote on X (Twitter), “Deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of K. Bhagyaraj sir. It feels especially unreal because I had the opportunity to meet him recently at Khushbu’s daughter’s wedding and spend some time with him.”
He also recalled his contribution to films like Who Saat Din, Mohabbat, and Beta. He also mentioned that Bhagyaraj was a creative genius whose contributions to Indian cinema go far beyond what many people know. He was the original creator behind stories that went on to become landmark Hindi films and career-defining milestones for so many of us.
Anil Ravipudi wrote on X, “The passing of K. Bhagyaraj garu is a great loss to Indian cinema. His unique storytelling and immense contribution to cinema have earned him a special place in the hearts of audiences. Prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers. May his soul attain eternal peace.”
