Janhvi Kapoor Opens Her Heart on Losing Sridevi
Janhvi Kapoor did appear at a ‘We The Women’, event in Jaipur, hosted by Barkha Dutt, in early 2023. She got candid about losing her beloved mother, Sridevi.
Janhvi Kapoor said that from an early age, she saw her mom’s work affect people. When she was a kid, she asked her mother why people were so crazy about her, even though she was not a doctor, a soldier, or a Nobel Prize winner. She said she was not even doing social work to evoke such strong emotions in people about her.
Sridevi replied that she was making people feel that she understood them. She added that she was making them escape the realities of life and show them larger-than-life emotions. Janhvi said that her mom had a connection with people that was irreplaceable, and she aspires to connect with people that way.
Janhvi Kapoor, in an interview with Bharkha Dutt said, “For a very long time, she didn’t go the way she should have gone about Sridevi’s death. She said that when Sridevi was alive, her life was completely different. When she lost her, she was in the middle of the shoot of her first film. Her film came out, and her life changed. The life she was leading before was idealistic, and the life she is leading right now is so different.
The way she coped with Sridevi’s loss was by devoting her time to work. Her mother always used to tell her that if you have chosen to be an actress, give it your best. Those were the words that echoed in her mind.
During COVID, when she was forced to spend time with herself that she realised how damaged she was. She felt like a zombie doing things that she didn’t even need to do. She said that she sensed that she was in a race she didn’t even need to be in. She was seeking the company of people she didn’t even want in her life.
She remembers the validation or approval she looked for from her mother, and after her mother’s death, she started seeking the same validation from the audience. She understood that she won’t get the validation she got from her mother, as no one loves like a mother does.
When she closes her eyes, she remembers her mother calling her ‘ladoo’. She added that when she is in front of the camera in her most vulnerable moments, she feels closest to Sridevi, and that’s why it’s the most sacred place to be. The tragedy of her mother’s death left a hole in her heart. She had to fight with the thought that she had all the privileges in her life, and now that something horrible has happened, she deserves it. She felt that she was being reprimanded for the privileges she enjoyed in her life.
