Ajey: The Untold Story – Ambitious, Informative, but Uneven
‘Ajey: The Untold Story’ is based on Shantanu Gupta’s book ‘The Monk Who Became Chief Minister’. The role of Ajey is played by Anant Joshi. The movie is directed by Ravindra Gautam. It was released on 19 September.
Biopics are challenging. You have a pre-made story about someone’s life. But there is a difference between creative freedom and sugarcoating the truth.
In the movie, Ajey runs a bus in his hometown. Some local conflicts forced his father to send him for higher studies. He grew disillusioned with campus politics. He finds haven in Mahant Avaidyanath’s ashram (Paresh Rawal). The narrative follows his transformation into Yogi Adityanath and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
The first half of the movie does well because of the strong cast. The writing by Dilip Bachan and Priyank Dubey is functional but not outstanding. In the second half, the momentum weakens as it turns into a record of Yogi’s journey. Editor Manan Sagar could have made the film more engaging. Vishnu Rao has done a commendable job of cinematography as he captures the panoramic hills and the shift to the ashram with elegance and precision. The background score works well in the first half, but becomes overwhelming and intrusive as the character rises in power.
Ajey: The Untold Story is all-encompassing and comprehensive, and it has its moments. The film falters, burdened by its lofty ambitions. The second half portrays exhaustive details about Yogi Adityanath’s achievements, which weakens the story. It feels more informative rather than engaging.
Ajey: The Untold Story could have been a compelling biopic with a more focused approach.
