Farewell to Piyush Pandey — The Storyteller Who Made India Smile Through Ads
Padmashree Piyush Pandey, the magician of the advertising world, is no more. He passed away in Mumbai at the age of 70 on 24 October 2025. The entire country was shocked upon hearing the news. He is the man who created the most beloved advertisements of our lives, which remained in our memories, and has now himself become a memory.
Piyush Pandey was not just an ad man but a storyteller who used to weave the words, gestures, and smiles of common people into advertisements. Piyush’s journey started from Jaipur. While playing cricket, he chose the field of advertising in his life and entered the advertising industry at the age of 27. He started with his brother Prasun Pandey. Both of them gave voice to radio jingles that became popular among common people. In 1982 he joined Ogilvy and Mather and from there, he changed the direction of Indian advertising. In 1994, he was nominated to the board of Ogilvy and gradually became the global face of Indian creativity. The advertisements he created not only sold products but also aroused emotions.
Fevicol’s truck advertisement, released in 2007, shows people loaded onto a truck who don’t fall off even on rough roads. This was not just an advertisement for gum but a symbol of unbreakable relationships. Hardly anyone can forget Cadbury’s cricket advertisement.
Siddhartha Basu wrote on Twitter, “Fellow Stephanian and blockmate, Piyush Pandey gave Indian ads a desi heart — from Mile Sur & Fevicol to Incredible India. The Ummeed se Dugna campaign for KBC2 was his. A joy to share the frame with him in Madras Café. He rose with heart, wit & warmth – and left a lasting legacy.”Sachin Tendulkar expressed grief on social media, “Piyush was a legend of Indian advertising. Through his work, he spoke a language that resonated with the entire nation and touched countless hearts. Our interactions during ad shoots were always filled with warmth and fun. He was deeply passionate about cricket, but his true genius lay in his ideas and words, ones that shaped brands and became a part of our culture. He will live on in every Indian’s heart and mind through his immortal work. My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.”
Overall, Piyush Pandey was a titan and legend of Indian advertising. He transformed communication by bringing everyday idioms, earthy humor, and genuine warmth into it. He was an amazing out-of-the-box thinker and a humble person. He weaved creativity with an Indian context. Today, India has lost a true son.
