
Farewell to Asrani: A Legendary Journey from Laughter to Legacy
On 20 October 2025, as the sun slowly turned into evening. That comedian and actor, Asrani, has left us. He breathed his last in the hospital after suffering from continuous breathing problems. The news of his demise was, in a way, the end of an era in the Bollywood world.
Asrani’s death was an emotional shock for his family, close friends, and co-stars. His wife, Manju Asrani, an actress colleague, is now alone in this world. They have one child. He was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, in a Sindhi-Hindu family. After the partition, his father came to Jaipur and started a carpet business there. Asrani completed his matriculation education in Jaipur. He also worked as a voice artist at All India Radio, Jaipur, to continue his studies. He then moved on to acting education. Between 1960 to 1962, he took acting lessons from Sahitya Kalabai Thakkar. In 1964, he took admission in the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Asrani started his career with the Hindi film ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiya’. He also played lead roles in some Gujarati films. He got real recognition in the 1970s when he made his mark in comic roles and supporting characters. His most memorable role was that of a jailer in the film Sholay, whose dialogue, “We are jailers from the British era,” People remember this dialogue even today. Moreover, he worked with Rajesh Khanna in more than 25 films. He also worked in blockbuster films in the 2000s. In this way, his career was like a long innings.
Overall, Bollywood has lost a legend. People have taken to social media to express their condolences over Asrani’s passing. From comic brilliance to heartfelt drama, Asrani defined versatility in Indian cinema for over five decades.
