Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has shocked the fans with his remark on the movie Gangs of Wasseypur. In a podcast with Digital Documentary he said,”Mujhe Gangs of Wasseypur se sakht nafrat hai. Jab bhi koi aadmi bolta hain a, Sir Wasseypur’, mann karta hai joota utarkar maarun.”

Anurag Kashyap remarked that the audience did not watch Wasseypur when it was released. The movie was four days in the theatre. He said this was the first film to be released late, and four days later, Ek Tha Tiger arrived. The film earned Rs 22 crore in four days. The studio calls it a flop. He said he wouldn’t be interested in making that film again. He said that if people had watched the movie in the cinema hall, things would have been different.

The 53-year-old filmmaker explained that his frustration doesn’t come from the film but from the poor audience response upon release. “Jab Wasseypur release hui, tab toh tumne dekhi nahi. Chaar din chali thi theatre mei. Phir cinema hall mei Ek Tha Tiger (2012) as gayi. Chaar din mei uss picture ne Rs 22 crore kamaye. Studio usko flop bolta hai, aur uss film ko lekar ap chahte ho ki main dobara banaun? Kyu banaun mein?” he said, adding that if viewers had supported such films in theatres, “Mera ghar uss se chal raha hota.”

Released in two parts in 2012, Gangs of Wasseypur achieved enduring popularity among a select audience though the film had a disappointing box office performance.
