When is Narali Purnima in 2025?
Narali Purnima is on 9th August, 2025. It is a day observed by the fishing community in Maharashtra.

Origins and Traditions of Narali Purnima
Sharavan Purnima, also known as Narali Purnima, is celebrated in the Month of Savan that is July or August. People worship lord Varuna with reverence on this special day.
It is said that on the full moon day, a coconut was offered to Lord Varuna by the fishermen to please him and seek his blessings for abundance in their jobs. Since then, this day is known as Narali Purnima or coconut day.
Usually, during the rainy season, fishermen don’t catch fish. The fishing community takes out processions in the bylanes of koliwadas, and a coconut is carried around in a ‘palki’. A coconut represents Lord Shiva, as even a coconut has three eyes.
Coconut is considered an auspicious offering to the gods. Fishermen mend their boats and decorate them with flower garlands. They also buy new boats and nets. People also lit diyas on their boats.
Coconut is a staple food of the day and is incorporated in various dishes and sweets. The festival is celebrated by offering a coconut to the sea god to protect the fishing community from mishaps when at sea.
Rituals, Regional Variations, and Significance
Fishermen pray to lord Varna, the god of water, and ask for the avoidance of natural calamities. One of the rituals of Narali Purnima is Upanayana. It is to celebrate the beginning of the new fishing season and the end of the monsoon season. In Southern India, brahmans put on new ‘janeu’; however, in North India, in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, they celebrate this day as a Purnima, which is an important festival for farmers.
Apart from offering the coconut to Varuna, the sea god, people also offer a prayer before the beginning of the new fishing season. At last, in their beautifully decorated boats, the fishermen set out for the sea.
