Did India Ease Ban on TikTok?

India eases ban on Chinese websites, TikTok, and Ali Express, or not ? Websites have been unblocked, but the apps remain blocked. Post the Galwan clashes, stern action was taken by blocking TikTok in India. Still, official confirmation from the companies or the government is awaited.

Several users in India claim that they are able to access the websites of TikTok and AliExpress. This is a feature that has not been rolled out for universal access in India. It is yet to be confirmed from the ISPs whether it has unbanned the websites or not.

In 2020, the government cited security reasons for banning these apps. It is a highly contentious matter as it deals with data, business, e-commerce, and security.  The White House is already on TikTok. Indian had banned these websites and apps for privacy and security reasons.

People cannot access TikTok beyond the homepage. They can also see notices on the web stating that TikTok has been banned by the government, and now they are trying to comply with the government regulation. Most of the pages of TikTok cannot be accessed.

The government will provide a substantial reason for the same. It was illegal to download the TikTok app. If the government is making it legal again, it has to issue a notification. It seems that if access to Chinese websites has been restored, it could be a part of a larger game plan.

Priyanka Chaturvedi, Sena UBT MP, said while speaking to India Today that she is concerned about not having a consistent policy for Chinese websites and apps. She added that she finds the unban extremely problematic for India.

The Ministry of Communication has responded by reiterating that the TikTok website is still blocked. Though the homepage is accessible, users cannot log in to TikTok.
